WAEC Delists 574 Schools Over Exam Malpractice Ahead of 2025 WASSCE

WAEC WASSCE exam malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Nigeria has withdrawn recognition from 574 schools found guilty of engaging in examination malpractice.

Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC’s National Office, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the council’s national headquarters in Lagos. He said the affected schools have been reported to the Federal Government through the Ministry of Education for further action.

According to Dangut, the delisted schools will no longer serve as official WAEC examination centres.

“This year, we have submitted a list of 574 schools whose recognition has been withdrawn. These schools are no longer recognised as WAEC examination centres, and we will not conduct exams there. This disciplinary measure will also be adopted by other examining bodies,” he stated.

Speaking ahead of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, scheduled to hold from Thursday, April 24 to Friday, June 20, Dangut announced that 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools have registered. This reflects an increase of 158,627 candidates compared to the previous year.

Out of the total candidates, 979,228 are male while 994,025 are female.

Dangut also highlighted WAEC’s growing commitment to the use of technology in assessments. He announced the introduction of the first-ever Computer-Based WASSCE (CB-WASSCE) for school candidates and noted that the format will ensure that no two candidates receive the same set of questions, a step designed to further reduce cheating and malpractice.
