The Vice-Chancellor of Trinity University, Yaba, Lagos, Prof. Clement Kolawole, has called for a compulsory one-year skill acquisition program for students after completing their junior secondary education.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Kolawole emphasized the need to equip students with practical skills that would enhance their knowledge and prepare them for the competitive job market.
“There is a need to subject students to a compulsory one-year skill acquisition program after their JSS classes. This will provide them with hands-on experience, empowering them to seize opportunities through entrepreneurship, especially in an economy where traditional degrees alone are not enough,” he stated.
His remarks come in response to the Federal Government’s proposal to replace the current 6-3-3-4 education system with a 12-year basic education model, which would eliminate the Junior and Senior Secondary School structure.
Kolawole stressed that skill acquisition fosters creativity, problem-solving abilities, confidence, and personal development, making students better prepared for senior secondary school and beyond.
He also urged the government to reintroduce the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) education program, which, he noted, had provided quality education and adequately prepared students for university studies.
According to him, the 6-3-3-4 system is not inherently flawed but requires proper funding and effective implementation. “The government should invest more in the system because it has the potential to make us self-reliant,” he added.
Kolawole further emphasized the importance of recruiting well-trained teachers and restoring teacher training colleges to ensure the production of professional educators.
“Teaching is a profession of commitment. Teacher training colleges play a vital role in preparing educators to effectively engage learners,” he said.
Highlighting Trinity University’s commitment to practical education, Kolawole revealed that the institution has 19 fully accredited courses and has partnered with six skill acquisition centers to equip students with job-ready skills. Additionally, the university collaborates with institutions such as the University of Lagos for mentorship programs.
