Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, has received widespread commendation from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) for implementing the approved 25 percent and 35 percent salary increments for university staff.
In a joint statement signed by the branch chairmen of the three unions—Dr. Saidu Isah Abubakar (ASUU), Ismaila Bala Muhammad (SSANU), and Aminu Yahaya Mika’ilu (NAAT)—the unions lauded the governor’s swift action in restoring and ensuring timely payments to visiting and sabbatical lecturers, as well as other university staff.
During a press conference at Sokoto State University, the union leaders highlighted Governor Aliyu’s efforts in settling outstanding allowances and ensuring the payment of the N70,000 national minimum wage to all state workers. They noted that his prompt salary payments and commitment to addressing pension arrears have significantly improved the welfare of civil servants in the state.
The unions described these initiatives as a major boost to the state’s economy and a reflection of the governor’s dedication to workers’ well-being. They urged him to sustain these pro-labor policies to keep the state’s workforce motivated and productive.
Beyond salary increments, the unions acknowledged Governor Aliyu’s contributions to the academic sector, particularly his support in facilitating the accreditation of the university’s programs by the National Universities Commission (NUC). They credited his administration with strengthening the institution’s academic standards and overall reputation.
Calling on their members to reciprocate the governor’s goodwill, the union leaders encouraged staff to remain dedicated to their duties, fostering increased productivity and service excellence.
Additionally, they commended the founder of the university, Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, for establishing a strong foundation for the institution.
The unions also appealed to Governor Aliyu to expedite the completion of staff housing projects, which are in the final stages of construction. They emphasized that providing on-campus housing would create a more conducive academic environment and further enhance institutional stability.
