The University of Ilorin, Kwara State, has launched the University Advancement Board as part of its efforts to revitalise the institution by incorporating private sector approaches.

The board is chaired by Dr. Abdulwahab A. Ibrahim, a distinguished financial expert, and includes the university’s three deputy vice-chancellors, bursar, internal auditor, along with members of the Senate, Convocation, and Congregation. The Director of Advancement will also serve on the board, with the university’s registrar as the secretary.

In his speech during the inauguration, Vice-Chancellor Professor Wahab Egbewole SAN stated that the board would provide strategic guidance, innovative ideas, and critical networks to take the university to new heights of excellence.

He outlined that the board’s role will be to develop strategies to enhance fundraising efforts, expand the university’s influence, and oversee resource mobilisation campaigns.

Additionally, the board is expected to foster relationships with potential donors, corporate sponsors, and philanthropic organisations, while also strengthening ties with alumni, community members, and other stakeholders.

Professor Egbewole emphasized that the board’s work would align with the university’s vision and goals, and that its efforts would be integral in strengthening the institution’s resource base through partnerships and endowments.

Professor Egbewole also highlighted the importance of raising the university’s visibility on national and international platforms and guiding priorities in areas such as infrastructure, academic excellence, and community development.

He stressed that the selection of board members was a deliberate process, prioritising values such as integrity, excellence, courage, and commitment. Notably, external members were chosen from the alumni to demonstrate the university’s capacity to deliver impactful outcomes. “This is especially significant as 2025 marks the university’s golden anniversary,” he added.

The Vice-Chancellor concluded by urging the Alumni Association to actively engage in the board’s work, stressing that giving back to the institution is essential.

He called on the Alumni Association to focus on supporting the university, rather than creating divisions or seeking personal benefits that could tarnish its reputation.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Abdulwahab Ibrahim, the chairman of the board, expressed his pride in serving, citing his long-standing connection to the university.

“I was one of the first lecturers appointed in the Accounting and Finance department, and the university provided me with my first career opportunity. I’m honoured to give back,” he said. He assured the university community that the board would work tirelessly and commit fully to its success.
