Professor Lilian Salami, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, has commended the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for its pivotal role in supporting public universities and other tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
She described TETFund as a crucial supporter of Nigerian higher education, preventing universities from declining and making significant investments in infrastructure and research.
Professor Salami specifically praised Arc. Sonny Echono, TETFund’s Executive Secretary, and his team for introducing innovative reforms. These reforms focus on improving research standards and integrating technology into educational practices. She emphasized the importance of adopting global technological advancements to keep Nigerian universities competitive internationally.
Discussing the challenges facing Nigerian universities, Professor Salami expressed concern about a recent 300% increase in electricity tariffs. This sharp rise has increased the University of Benin’s monthly electricity bill from N80 million to N280 million, straining the institution’s finances and leading to electricity rationing, affecting student life and academic activities negatively.
Despite these challenges, Professor Salami highlighted achievements during her tenure, including substantial infrastructure development funded by TETFund, a decrease in cult-related activities, and enhancements in student and staff welfare.
