The University of Ibadan (UI) has once again demonstrated its commitment to innovation and practical learning, as six of its graduates emerged winners in the prestigious British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) Foundation Agripreneur Awards, each receiving ₦1.5 million in grant funding.
The winners—Samuel Afolabi, Akintayo Akintunde, Ojo Florence, Kehinde Amuo, Khadeejah Owolabi, and Eyitayo Ojo—presented unique agribusiness concepts spanning fish farming, apiculture, silviculture, and livestock rearing. These ideas were selected for their innovation, market potential, sustainability, and scalability.
At the pitch and grant award ceremony held on April 10, 2025, at First Bank Hall, UI, 11 finalists were shortlisted to present their agribusiness proposals. The top six were chosen following a rigorous evaluation process.
In his keynote address, BATN Foundation’s General Manager, Dare Odusanya, highlighted the purpose behind the Graduate Agripreneur Programme.
“We’re not just funding businesses—we’re investing in bold ideas, passionate youth, and a future where agriculture becomes a pillar of economic transformation and food security,” he said.
He noted that the initiative goes beyond financial support, offering mentorship from seasoned professionals, access to land, and business support to ensure successful venture implementation.
“This programme is about building a generation of agri-leaders—young Nigerians who will champion sustainability, food security, and rural development,” Odusanya added.
The call for applications opened in February 2025 and attracted numerous entries from UI’s graduates, postgraduates, and alumni. The selection process culminated in a showcase of talent and vision, drawing notable stakeholders from the university and beyond.
Speaking at the event, Professor Bamidele Omitoyin from the Faculty of Agriculture applauded the winners and emphasized the programme’s alignment with the university’s goals.
“We are proud of our graduates and their achievements. This initiative reflects our mission to produce graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped with the practical skills to drive economic progress,” he said.
The event drew support from various faculties, including the Deans of Agriculture and Renewable Natural Resources, faculty members, students, and a vibrant network of aspiring agripreneurs.
With this achievement, the University of Ibadan continues to stand out as a breeding ground for innovation and entrepreneurial excellence in agriculture.
