The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, marking the milestone with a special induction ceremony for 90 newly graduated veterinary medical doctors. The event, which took place over five days with the theme “60 Years of Veterinary Education: The Goals, The Gains, and The Gaps,” highlighted the faculty’s long-standing role in veterinary education and welcomed new professionals into the field.
The induction ceremony was a key part of the celebrations, where Dr. Oladotun Fadipe, acting Registrar of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), administered the oath to the new doctors. The ceremony was led by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, and assisted by AIG (Dr.) Aishatu Baju, the VCN President. Dr. Adebanji Adeniyi gave an inspiring lecture during the ceremony, urging the new veterinarians to maintain high standards of professionalism and moral conduct in their practice.
Prof. Basil Orioghae Ikede, a distinguished 1967 graduate of the faculty, sent a goodwill message congratulating the faculty on its achievements over the past 60 years. He praised the faculty for producing veterinarians who have made significant contributions to research and education in Nigeria and worldwide. He encouraged the new graduates to take pride in their profession and carry the title of “doctor” with confidence and humility.
Prof. Olufunke Ola-Davies, the Dean of the Faculty, expressed her appreciation for the faculty’s progress during her tenure. Under her leadership, the faculty has achieved full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for all its courses. She highlighted advancements including the promotion of five readers, six senior lecturers, and 15 professors, as well as the hiring of 23 new lecturers.
Prof. Ola-Davies also detailed recent equipment upgrades, including six binocular microscopes, a compound microscope, two ultrasound machines, a semi-automated microtome, a spectrophotometer, a blood pressure monitor, two otoscopes, a large animal weighing scale, and a digital X-ray machine. Additionally, a 45 kVA Mikano generator was purchased to ensure reliable power for the faculty auditorium, underscoring the faculty’s commitment to top-notch veterinary education facilities.
