The Tompolo Foundation has introduced a training programme for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in the Warri Zonal Area of Delta State, aimed at improving teaching skills, strengthening the education system, and contributing to national development.
The initiative, which was officially launched on Tuesday, had over 50 corps members in attendance. Chairman and founder of the foundation, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, reaffirmed the foundation’s dedication to promoting quality education. Represented by his Media Adviser, Dr. Paul Bebenimibo, he emphasized the transformative power of education and the critical role teachers play in shaping the future of society.
Tompolo noted that his experience growing up in the creeks of the Niger Delta and leading the foundation had exposed him to the challenges corps members face in effectively teaching students, particularly in rural and riverine communities. While NYSC members help bridge the shortage of teachers in these areas, many lack the necessary pedagogical skills for effective classroom engagement. This, he explained, led to the partnership between the Tompolo Foundation and the Delta State NYSC to equip corps members with essential teaching techniques that foster student engagement and critical thinking.
Beyond training, the foundation has also been supporting corps members with stipends, accommodations, and other incentives to encourage their service in underserved areas.
Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, commended the Tompolo Foundation and the NYSC for the initiative, urging other stakeholders to adopt similar efforts. Represented by Chief Ejiroghene Erifevieme, she expressed optimism about the positive impact the training would have on both corps members and the schools they serve.
Chief MacDonald Igbaduwei also praised the foundation for its commitment to improving education in rural areas, noting that the training would refine the teaching abilities of corps members and make learning more engaging for students.
During a lecture titled “Pedagogical Skills: A Key Imperative for Enhancing Quality Education in Nigeria,” Dr. Oghenevwede Oyovwi highlighted the importance of equipping corps members with effective teaching strategies. He outlined benefits such as increased confidence, improved classroom management, and stronger community engagement.
Director of Education Projects for the Tompolo Foundation, Dr. Job Bebenimibo, announced that the training programme would officially commence on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, with the first batch of 50 corps members.
