President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian universities to develop advanced technological tools to aid in detecting and tracking security threats across the country.

Speaking on Saturday at the combined 26th to 31st convocation ceremony of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), the president, represented by Professor Tanko Ishaya, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, emphasized the need for modern security solutions beyond traditional methods.

He noted that combating insecurity in the 21st century requires more than security operatives physically pursuing criminals with firearms. Instead, he urged universities to engage in research and technological innovations to help tackle the nation’s security challenges.

“My administration is aware of the security challenges faced by this university and remains committed to making all learning institutions across the country safe and conducive for students and staff,” Tinubu said.

He further challenged academics to develop tools for detecting and tracking security breaches to ensure national safety.

“Our universities should focus on research that promotes the use of drones and other technology-driven solutions to combat insecurity on campuses and beyond,” he added.

The president praised the Nigerian military’s efforts in enhancing national security and assured continued government support.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing education through increased funding via capital appropriations and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). However, he urged university administrators to be accountable and prudent in managing resources.

Highlighting the role of universities of agriculture, he emphasized the need for these institutions to align with his administration’s agricultural and livestock transformation agenda.

“Agriculture must move beyond subsistence levels if we are to achieve food security,” Tinubu stated. “Commercial and mechanized farming should be our new approach.”

He called for consistent training of agricultural manpower, collaboration with relevant organizations, and the development of improved crop varieties to support the government’s food security policies.

Referencing the convocation lecture titled “The Complex Relationship Between Insecurity and Food Systems in Nigeria,” the president acknowledged the importance of understanding the link between security and food supply.

Tinubu commended JOSTUM’s management for its innovative efforts despite global economic challenges and security concerns. He reiterated that education and security remain crucial to national development.

Congratulating the graduating students, he urged them to apply their knowledge in contemporary agricultural practices to create wealth and generate employment for Nigeria’s youth.
