President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of two new federal universities in Osun and Ekiti States. The approval came after he signed the bills supporting their creation on Thursday in Abuja.
According to a statement by the president’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the newly established institutions are the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
President Tinubu emphasized that these specialized universities aim to meet the educational needs of Nigerians while fostering research, innovation, and economic growth. He added that the institutions will serve as training centers for professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, enhancing Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
Additionally, the president approved the Federal Government’s takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, converting it into a federal institution.
With this development, Nigeria now has 63 federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities. Earlier, on February 3, 2025, President Tinubu had also approved the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni town, Tai, Rivers State.
