TETFund Launches Initiative to Address Power Failures in Tertiary Institutions

TETFUND

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced a special intervention aimed at tackling persistent power outages in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

Chairman of TETFund’s Board of Trustees, Aminu Masari, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the steering committee for the Alternative Energy Solution Initiative in tertiary institutions.

Masari stated that the initiative aligns with the fund’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to ensure a stable power supply in Nigeria’s higher education sector.

The Federal Government has partnered with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to enhance power availability in tertiary institutions. Through this initiative, REA plans to install captive solar hybrid power plants in 15 federal tertiary institutions and two teaching hospitals.

This effort is part of a broader strategy to improve electricity access for underserved communities. While no specific timeline has been set for the project’s completion, REA has made significant strides in expanding electricity access, deploying more than 67 mini-grids and 995,396 solar home systems.

The newly inaugurated steering committee has been tasked with submitting a preliminary report within two months and will play a key role in the initiative’s implementation.
