Some students were reported to have lost their lives on Saturday morning in a fatal accident along the Oyo-Ogbomoso Road in Oyo State while traveling to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

A video clip seen by reporters showed the tragic aftermath of the crash, which eyewitnesses attributed to brake failure in the commercial vehicle conveying the students to a JAMB centre in Ogbomoso.

The video was shared with the caption: “Fatal accident claimed the lives of students that were going to write JAMB in Ogbomoso on Oyo Road, Oyo State.”

Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Command, Adewale Osifeso, for confirmation have so far been unsuccessful.

In a separate development, JAMB has intensified efforts to maintain the credibility of the 2025 UTME. The board announced that 27 impersonators have been arrested and handed over to the Nigerian Police for prosecution.

Further tightening its measures, JAMB delisted four Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres for failing to meet required technical and ethical standards. Spokesperson Fabian Benjamin emphasized that only centres upholding excellence will continue to operate, warning that any institution falling short would face sanctions.

The board advised candidates who were originally assigned to the affected centres to urgently reprint their examination slips to know their new examination venues and dates. It also stressed that no excuses would be accepted from candidates who fail to comply.

As of Friday, April 25, 2025, JAMB reported that over 900,000 candidates had successfully completed the UTME out of the 2,083,600 registered for this year’s examination.
