Stanbic IBTC has recently awarded scholarships to 200 outstanding students from various public universities across Nigeria, recognizing their exceptional academic achievements and potential contributions to the nation’s future. These scholarships were granted from a pool of 16,000 applicants, highlighting the competitive nature of the selection process.
Dr. Demola Sogunle, the Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic IBTC, addressed the recipients at the scholarship event held in Lagos. He praised the scholars for their hard work, resilience, and dedication, which led to their selection. Dr. Sogunle emphasized that the scholarships not only acknowledge their past accomplishments but also symbolize their potential for even greater achievements. He remarked, “Your hard work, resilience, and dedication have brought you this far, and this scholarship is proof of your potential to achieve even greater heights.”
The bank’s commitment to education as a transformative tool has been a driving force behind its scholarship programme, which began in 2019. The initiative aims to support brilliant students who face financial challenges in achieving their academic goals. Dr. Sogunle expressed the bank’s vision of a Nigeria where every child can reach their full potential, regardless of their background. He stated, “We envision a Nigeria where education is the great equalizer.”
Stanbic IBTC’s investment in these students’ education represents a step towards a brighter future for Nigeria. Emi Agaba-Oloja, the Executive Director of Stanbic IBTC Trustees Limited, highlighted the bank’s broader commitment to education. She explained that the bank’s endowment fund also provides support in cases of parental death or incapacitation. To manage funds effectively for children’s education, the education trust requires a minimum of N100,000.
One of the scholarship beneficiaries, Temitope Jinadu, a 300-level Electrical Electronics student at the University of Lagos, shared his appreciation for the support he received. After achieving a score of 338 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME), Temitope used the scholarship to invest in online courses and mentorship, which has helped him maintain a first-class grade. He expressed his hope to give back to society in the future, reflecting the programme’s broader impact.
