Shamsuddeen Usman Foundation to Launch Nigeria’s First AI Centre for Education

Shamsuddeen Usman Foundation AI center

The Shamsuddeen Usman Foundation (SUF) is set to establish Nigeria’s first artificial intelligence (AI) center aimed at advancing education in the country. This announcement was made by Sadiq Usman, a trustee of the foundation, during a press briefing in Abuja. He emphasized the potential of AI to propel Nigeria into the fourth industrial revolution, highlighting the foundation’s commitment to ensuring that Nigeria and its people are not left behind in this technological era.

Sadiq Usman expressed concern that while Africa is still grappling with challenges from the first and second industrial revolutions, such as building energy infrastructure and roads, the rest of the world is already moving towards the fourth industrial revolution. He pointed out the unique opportunity that AI presents, allowing Nigeria to leapfrog directly to the latest technological advancements without necessarily having to fully develop the stages of earlier industrial revolutions. This innovative approach aims to position Nigeria as a leader in technological adoption and educational development on the continent.

In addition to the AI center, the foundation plans to unveil a book titled “Public Policy and Agent Interests: Perspectives from the Emerging World” by Shamsuddeen Usman, a former Nigerian minister, on September 26. This event is scheduled to take place just over a week after Usman’s 75th birthday. The book provides a comprehensive exploration of the factors that drive or hinder growth and development in emerging economies, using Nigeria as a focal point. It delves into the complexities of government operations, policy formulation and implementation, economic management, and the overall growth strategy within developing countries.

The book is anticipated to serve as a critical resource for policymakers, technocrats, business leaders, and public officials, offering deep insights into the interplay between government, its agencies, and the private sector, and how these relationships impact national growth, investment, and economic performance. The book aims to highlight the difficult choices and trade-offs that must be made in public policy design and execution, making it a valuable reference for those involved in governance and economic planning.

Proceeds from the book launch will be directed toward supporting the Shamsuddeen Usman Foundation’s initiatives, including the establishment of the AI center. The unveiling event is expected to attract notable figures, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, and former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, showcasing the high level of interest and support for this groundbreaking educational development project.
