Professor Abiodun Adebayo, the Vice Chancellor of Covenant University, recently highlighted the important role of science in creating jobs and advancing technology in Nigeria. At the opening of the 2024 Science Olympiad, he explained that science is more than just a school subject—it’s a crucial tool for shaping the future and boosting economic growth.
Professor Adebayo urged the federal government to focus on teaching technology from a young age. He believes that by doing this, Nigeria can fully use its resources and advance its technology. “Starting with technology education early can help us make the most of our resources and drive technological progress,” he said.
The Science Olympiad is an annual event that aims to improve science education in Nigeria. It gives students a chance to show their skills and be recognized for their achievements. Professor Adebayo emphasized that this competition is important for building a skilled workforce, which is essential for the country’s development.
Adewunmi Odunaike, National Director of Science Olympiad Nigeria, also stressed the need for early science education. “Science is key to development, and we need to engage students from a young age,” he said. The Olympiad helps students use their knowledge to solve real-world problems, preparing them for future scientific challenges.
Okeh Ochulo, Secretary of the Executive Committee on Innovation and Strategy at the Chemical Society of Nigeria, highlighted the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. “Science builds nations. Nigeria should invest more in STEM education to help students develop creativity and problem-solving skills,” Ochulo stated.
Oluwafemi Adenuga from the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) School in Lagos shared that 26 schools from various states participated in the National Tournament. Although some schools from the northern regions couldn’t attend due to security issues, he encouraged parents to support STEM education. “STEM education is vital for national growth and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Adenuga added.
The Science Olympiad includes three divisions: Division A for elementary, Division B for junior secondary, and Division C for senior secondary. Skyfield International College from Akure, Ondo State, won the top prize of N30,000. Ifako International School in Lagos came second in Division A, and Mrs. Eze Ndidi Regina was named the Science Olympiad Nigeria Coach of the Decade for Division A. TSI Nursery & Primary School in Lagos was named the overall champion in Division A.
