The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday, officially launched a School Protection Squad (SPS) in Delta State, aimed at strengthening security in and around educational institutions.
Represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5, AIG Salman Dogo, the IGP said the initiative marks a significant milestone in the community’s ongoing efforts to build a safer and more secure future for schoolchildren.
“This marks the official launch of the Safe Schools Initiative and the inauguration of the Delta State Police Command School Protection Squad,” he stated. “It is a comprehensive, community-driven strategy developed to secure schools, empower students, and foster trust among law enforcement, educators, and families.”
Egbetokun emphasized that the School Protection Squad is a specially trained and equipped unit tasked with ensuring the safety of learning institutions and providing rapid response to any security threat. “This initiative reflects the Inspector General’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding students and educational facilities across the nation,” he added.
Commissioner of Police and National Coordinator of the School Protection Squad, CP Abayomi Shogunle, highlighted that the right to education is essential for social and economic advancement. He stressed that investment in educational safety is a crucial investment in the country’s human capital development.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, praised the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force for prioritizing the safety of schools. He commended the organization of the stakeholder forum, which brought together security personnel, educators, and community leaders to discuss strategies for safeguarding pupils and students.
Oborevwori further expressed appreciation for the police force’s dedication, noting that the initiative aligns with his administration’s MORE Agenda, which emphasizes enhanced peace, safety, and development.
