The Oyo State government has enrolled no fewer than 10,000 vulnerable children in public primary schools into the state’s Health Insurance Scheme under the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA).
Governor ‘Seyi Makinde, represented by Deputy Governor Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, presented health insurance identity cards to beneficiaries during the official flag-off of the initiative at the Ibadan Civic Centre, Idi Ape, on Thursday.
The enrolled pupils were selected from 90 schools across 18 of the 33 Local Government Areas in the state.
Speaking at the event, Lawal commended OYSHIA for extending the program to public schools, emphasizing the importance of ensuring access to quality healthcare for students.
“We appreciate OYSHIA for initiating this laudable program. So far, 90 schools have been covered, and we aim to reach around 10,000 pupils in the shortest possible time. This initiative must be extended to other zones across the state,” he said.
The deputy governor also acknowledged the support of UNICEF in improving public primary and secondary schools, urging the organization to continue its contributions.
“Our goal is to provide these children with a conducive environment where they can grow, learn, and showcase their talents while remaining healthy. Many of them come from challenging backgrounds, lacking basic facilities such as proper sanitation. This intervention will help prevent diseases and ensure their well-being,” he added.
