Osun Governor Distributes Free Corrective Eyeglasses, Enhances Healthcare Facilities

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has announced that over 42,000 pupils and students in public primary and secondary schools have received free corrective eyeglasses to support their educational aspirations, which might have been hindered by various degrees of visual impairments.

Governor Adeleke made this known in Osogbo, the state capital, during the symbolic presentation of corrective glasses and medications to students in public schools. The event also included the distribution of free medical equipment to Osun Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS) accredited government hospitals.

He revealed that out of 345,000 pupils and students screened for eye problems across the state, over 42,000 identified with visual impairments have received necessary interventions, including corrective eyeglasses, essential medications, and, in some cases, surgical procedures.

The governor emphasized that the initiative currently focuses on public schools as a pilot phase, with plans to extend the program to private schools to ensure no child is left behind.

In addition, Governor Adeleke unveiled multi-million naira worth of medical equipment acquired through the Osun Health Insurance Agency (OSHIA) for accredited government health facilities under OHIS. He stated that this investment aims to provide enrollees with the highest standard of medical care.

“Our administration remains committed to revitalizing the health sector. We have fully approved the training allowance for resident doctors and implemented the full COMMESS and CONHESS salary structures for health workers to ensure they receive their entitlements promptly. We have also embarked on extensive renovation and upgrading of healthcare facilities across the state,” he stated.

Governor Adeleke highlighted that within two years, 200 out of the state’s 332 focal Primary Health Centres have been modernized, with the remaining facilities set to follow.

“As part of our commitment to accessible healthcare, we have enrolled over 25,000 pensioners into the Osun Health Insurance Scheme free of charge, ensuring that senior citizens receive quality medical care. Additionally, we have enrolled about 10,000 persons living with disabilities (PWDs) into OHIS and provided thousands of assistive devices, including motorized wheelchairs, walking sticks, crutches, hearing aids, talking watches, ultraviolet creams, umbrellas, and eyeglasses.”

With these interventions, the Osun State Government continues to prioritize healthcare accessibility and quality, ensuring that all residents receive essential medical support.
