In a major step towards education and youth empowerment in Nigeria, leading financial institution OPay has extended its N1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship initiative to students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
OAU becomes the third beneficiary of the prestigious program, which aims to ease financial burdens and promote academic excellence among tertiary institution students. Through this initiative, OPay reinforces its commitment to investing in the next generation of leaders, ensuring students can focus on their studies without economic constraints.
Speaking on the expansion, OPay’s Chief Public Affairs Officer, Justin Zhang, emphasized the crucial role of education in nation-building and the company’s dedication to fostering opportunities for students nationwide. He highlighted OAU’s legacy of producing outstanding graduates and expressed pride in supporting the university’s future leaders.
Professor O.M.A. Daramola, OAU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), welcomed the initiative, acknowledging its transformative impact. He noted that while the university has long supported indigenous students, this scholarship provides an essential safety net, alleviating financial struggles and enabling students to pursue their academic goals with stability.
For students like Omoboriowo Damilola Isaac, a 600-level Clinical Sciences student, the scholarship represents a life-changing opportunity. He expressed gratitude for the financial relief it brings, particularly for those in programs with high tuition costs, allowing them to focus fully on their studies.
Beyond providing financial aid, the initiative represents a broader commitment to uplifting communities, as the beneficiaries carry the aspirations of their families and society. Following its successful rollout in two other universities last year, OPay has assured that the scholarship program will continue to expand, reaching more institutions across Nigeria.
As the initiative grows, OPay remains steadfast in its belief that education is a driving force for progress and inclusivity, helping to unlock the vast potential of Nigeria’s youth and pave the way for a brighter future.
