Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has approved the conversion of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, into a University of Agriculture and Agribusiness.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ebenezer Adeniyan, in Akure. Aiyedatiwa explained that the decision followed a review of the previous administration’s plan to upgrade the polytechnic into a University of Management Science and Technology.

He emphasized that the newly established university would align with the state government’s agricultural and food security revolution initiative. To ensure a smooth transition, a committee will be set up to outline the implementation process, safeguarding the interests of current students and staff.

In furthering the state’s agricultural vision, the governor signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the government and a private investor for a N15 billion youth-focused agriculture initiative. The agreement, made with AgroMall Discovery and Extension Limited, will support the Young Ranchers Agricultural Cluster Development Programme, which aims to provide practical farming experience and hands-on training for young people in agriculture-related operations.

The initiative will be implemented across three agricultural clusters, with three higher institutions—including the newly upgraded Rufus Giwa Polytechnic—serving as pilot beneficiaries. Each institution involved will not only serve as a training ground but will also benefit financially from the proceeds of the program.

Additionally, Aiyedatiwa approved an agreement with BBA Consult for the development of a secured ICT system to enhance state resource planning and management, ultimately boosting revenue generation. Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, established in 1979 and renamed in 2003 in honor of Chief Rufus Foluso Giwa, has played a significant role in technical, vocational, and entrepreneurial education in Nigeria.

Despite its contributions, the institution has faced challenges such as underfunding, infrastructural decay, and limited research opportunities. The decision to upgrade it into a University of Agriculture and Agribusiness is aimed at strengthening its role in agricultural development, food security, and agribusiness innovation.
