The National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr. Audu Amba, has emphasized the need for adequate funding to improve the education sector in Nigeria. This important appeal was made during the celebration of World Teachers’ Day 2024 in Ibadan, Oyo State, where Amba was represented by Mr. Isa Shuaib, another official from the union.
During his address, Mr. Amba noted that 23 states across Nigeria have already implemented the new retirement age for teachers, which allows them to retire at 65 years and serve for 40 years. This development is seen as a significant step towards improving the working conditions of teachers in the country, especially as the government seeks to retain experienced educators within the system.
However, Amba pointed out that 13 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have yet to adopt the new retirement policy for teachers. He urged these states and the FCT to follow suit, as implementing this policy could greatly enhance the sector’s overall effectiveness.
The NUT President also stressed the importance of proper funding in ensuring that education policies are well-formulated and executed. He emphasized that sufficient financial resources are necessary to make education more effective, especially in areas where improvements are needed. Adequate funding would not only enhance teaching quality but also create better learning environments for students across the country.
The NUT continues to advocate for reforms that will benefit both educators and students, with funding being a crucial aspect of these reforms. By addressing the financial challenges within the sector, the government can ensure the successful implementation of key policies that will drive progress in Nigeria’s education system.
