The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 18 degree programs to launch the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences Enugu (FUAHSE) in the 2024/2025 academic year. This approval follows President Bola Tinubu’s decision in March 2024 to convert and upgrade the former Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy into a full-fledged health sciences university.
The university’s inaugural Senate proposed 22 programs within five allied healthcare faculties, and the NUC has authorized the verification of 18 of these programs for the initial phase. This step marks a significant milestone as FUAHSE prepares to establish itself as Nigeria’s first university dedicated to health sciences.
During the program verification, NUC Academic Planner Jude Akubue confirmed that Acting Executive Secretary Amb. Chris J. Maiyaki authorized the process, bringing together a team of experts in health sciences and allied fields from institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, and Babcock University. These resource persons will provide valuable insights as FUAHSE finalizes its academic offerings.
Acting Vice-Chancellor of FUAHSE, Prof. John Emaimo, warmly welcomed the verification team, expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for supporting the transformation of the college into a specialized university. Prof. Emaimo highlighted the NUC’s careful selection of the verification team, ensuring that FUAHSE’s academic framework is well-prepared for the incoming student cohort.
This development reflects Nigeria’s increasing commitment to advancing health sciences education and aligns with the NUC’s mission to ensure high standards across the nation’s educational institutions. The university is set to offer comprehensive training in various allied health fields, a critical step toward addressing Nigeria’s healthcare workforce needs.
