The National Open University of Nigeria Alumni Association (NOUNAA) has unveiled a scholarship initiative aimed at easing the financial burden of new students. The programme offers a grant of ₦50,000 to support tuition fees for both undergraduate and postgraduate students newly admitted into the university.
According to the association, the scholarship is open to all prospective students, regardless of their state or location within Nigeria.
Announcing the initiative during its scholarship launch and awareness campaign held in selected parts of Abuja on Thursday, NOUNAA President, Ambassador Ifeanyi Kingsley Obukwelu, stated that the programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of eliminating illiteracy across the nation.
“This campaign is more than just a scholarship programme — it’s a strategic movement, a bold statement, and a reaffirmation of our belief in the power of accessible education,” Obukwelu said. “It is designed to bridge financial gaps, eliminate entry barriers, and inspire a new generation of learners across Nigeria to see the National Open University of Nigeria as their launchpad to greatness.”
He emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader advocacy strategy under his leadership to strengthen the visibility and public acceptance of the NOUN brand.
“For too long, distance learning has faced unfair skepticism,” he said. “But NOUN graduates are trailblazers — making impact across sectors like government, business, education, technology, and the creative industries. It’s time to tell that story boldly. And what better way than investing in the future scholars who will carry that legacy forward?”
Obukwelu noted that the ₦50,000 scholarship is not a random figure but a symbol of hope and a significant step toward building a knowledgeable, skilled, and inclusive Nigerian society.
He added that the initiative is fully powered by the NOUN alumni community — individuals who have personally experienced the transformative power of the institution’s flexible and quality education — and are now giving back to open doors for others.
“To every aspiring student out there: if you’ve ever dreamt of pursuing higher education but were held back by financial challenges; if you desire flexible learning without compromising on quality — this is your moment,” he urged. “Visit our website, scan the code, apply, get admitted — and you could be one of many receiving the ₦50,000 scholarship to kickstart your journey.”
Ambassador Obukwelu also appreciated past leaders of the association for their efforts, noting that his executive team has continued some of their impactful projects. One such achievement is the completion of a water project at the Alumni Village in Kuje, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory.
