Nigeria is strengthening its commitment to international academic partnerships, particularly with Qatar. This was made clear during the Qatar-Nigeria Educational Partnership Forum in Doha. The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, explained the areas where both countries can work together to improve education. The announcement was shared by Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations for the Ministry of Education.
Prof. Mamman highlighted three main areas for collaboration: research partnerships between Nigerian and Qatari institutions, student exchange programs allowing students to study in Qatar, and sabbatical opportunities for Nigerian scholars to conduct research in Qatar. These efforts are aimed at promoting academic growth and cultural exchange, aligning with Nigeria’s plan to make its education system more global, a vision supported by President Bola Tinubu during his visit to Qatar.
The forum also stressed the importance of creating strategic partnerships between higher education institutions in both countries. Nigerian scholars who are involved in advanced research will benefit from sharing knowledge and working with top Qatari universities. This will lead to new research opportunities and help in exchanging ideas that benefit both nations.
One major topic discussed at the forum was the issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria. Qatar’s “Education Above All” initiative, in partnership with the Kaduna State government, has successfully helped return 100,000 children to school, with a focus on girls and children with disabilities. This project has already worked in Borno State and is expected to expand to other regions, ensuring more children in need can access education.
Prof. Mamman praised Qatar’s efforts and expressed Nigeria’s willingness to deepen this partnership. He stated that this collaboration will not only address current educational challenges but also position Nigerian universities and scholars to gain more global recognition.
