The Nigerian government has entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China to enhance Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across the country.
The agreement aims to equip Nigerians with hands-on skills, improve technical education, and strengthen vocational training implementation nationwide. It was signed on March 18, 2025, at an event attended by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo.
Dr. Sani-Gwarzo emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating that it would enhance Nigeria’s technical capacity and ensure practical application of knowledge. He noted that while the MoU is not legally binding, it establishes a framework for long-term collaboration and expansion.
“This collaboration will significantly enhance Nigeria’s technical capacity, ensuring that knowledge gained is effectively applied,” he said. “What makes this document unique is that it allows for future expansion in scope, improvement in depth, and enhancement in quality.”
He also highlighted China’s rapid advancements in education and technology, stating that partnering with China is a strategic move for Nigeria’s progress.
Representing China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Mr. John Zhao assured that China would bring expertise, technology, and equipment to support skills acquisition in Nigeria.
“We are determined and confident that we can advance together with Nigeria. This MoU will enable us to collaborate on high-level initiatives to implement tangible improvements,” Zhao stated.
He further emphasized that the partnership aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to prioritizing education, ensuring that the collaboration supports Nigeria’s development goals.
