The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has launched a major initiative to transform Nigeria’s education sector through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). On Sunday, NCS President Dr. Sirajo Aliyu announced plans to revolutionize how education is delivered and accessed across the country. His vision is to make teaching and learning more affordable and effective by integrating advanced technologies.
Dr. Aliyu said that the NCS plans to use new technologies, like AI, to boost national growth and innovation. He pointed out that AI can improve education by providing online resources, letting students learn at their own speed, and lowering education costs. This will make quality education more accessible to many Nigerians.
The NCS is dedicated to using AI to tackle major education challenges. Dr. Aliyu highlighted that with government backing and better infrastructure, like affordable broadband, widespread online learning could become feasible. He noted that for just N100, students could get necessary data for their studies, making learning more accessible and effective.
At a recent virtual forum hosted by the NCS, IT experts advocated for a major update to the education system to integrate AI. The event, titled “Artificial Intelligence in Education: Implications, Strategies for National Growth,” focused on how AI could advance education and stimulate economic growth.
Prof. Abejide Ibijola from the University of Johannesburg discussed the common educational challenges faced by African countries, including Nigeria. He emphasized the need for better infrastructure, increased funding, and improved teacher training. He also stressed the importance of aligning educational curriculums with societal and industry needs.
Salisu Abdulrahman, an Associate Professor of AI, explained how AI could boost economic growth by improving business production and worker skills. He urged for more investment in AI research and development in both universities and startups to drive innovation and enhance the country’s business potential.
Prof. Idris Muhammed, Executive Secretary of the National Board of Technical Education (NBTE), stressed the importance of adopting AI as part of the fourth industrial revolution. He urged a review of traditional assessment methods to include practical knowledge, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for the future.
The forum highlighted how AI can transform education and emphasized the importance of working together to use this technology to improve Nigeria’s education system and boost economic growth.
