The Federal Ministry of Education, in partnership with the UK FCDO-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) programme, has unveiled a new centralised e-learning platform named eLearn. This innovative platform is designed to transform education in Nigeria by providing high-quality educational resources to learners and teachers across all levels, from basic schools to tertiary institutions.

eLearn offers a variety of educational materials, including interactive exercises, videos, and texts, which are accessible to both students and educators. The platform’s goal is to enhance professional training for teachers while promoting digital inclusion and making educational content more accessible.

A two-day stakeholder workshop was recently held in Abuja to introduce the eLearn platform. During the event, Gbenga Odewale from the Ministry of Education, representing Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman, emphasized the government’s commitment to integrating technology into the education sector. Odewale highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Ministry’s policies and strategies aimed at improving educational standards through technology.

PLANE also mentioned creating a central eLearning resource library with the Ministry’s help. This library will organize educational materials from across the country, making it easy for teachers, students, and parents to access and use them to improve education quality.

Ian Attfield, the Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission, talked about the importance of ensuring that the eLearn platform is inclusive and accessible, particularly for rural communities and individuals with disabilities. He pointed out the need to address the digital divide, which often leaves women, girls, and individuals with learning disabilities or sensory impairments at a disadvantage.

Attfield emphasized that the platform should not only offer quality resources but also ensure that these resources are accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or personal challenges. By addressing these issues, the eLearn platform aims to create a more equitable educational environment across Nigeria.

The introduction of eLearn is expected to make a significant impact on teaching and learning nationwide. By providing equal access to quality educational resources, the platform hopes to support educational development and improve learning outcomes for all students and teachers in Nigeria.
