The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) in Nigeria has made a big change. Now, people who want to study at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) or other distance learning schools must register with JAMB first. This new rule is for all students, even those who want to study from home or part-time.
JAMB says this new rule will help stop cheating and make sure everyone’s information is correct. They want to make it harder for bad people to trick the system or change students’ records.
The new rule says that everyone who wants to go to any university or college in Nigeria must give their National Identification Number (NIN) when they register. This includes people who want to study full-time, part-time, or through distance learning.
JAMB explained this new rule in a message they sent out in Abuja. They said they want to make it easy for everyone to follow the new rules. They wrote, “We want to stop bad people from doing things that aren’t fair. So, now everyone who wants to study at any school in Nigeria must give their NIN when they register. This is true no matter how they want to study, whether it’s regular classes or studying from home.”
For people who want to study at NOUN or other distance learning schools, there’s an extra step. They need to make something called a “profile code” before they can register with JAMB. To do this, they need to send their NIN from their phone to JAMB. They can send it to the number 55019 or 66019.
This new rule is also for people who are already studying in these kinds of programs but have not given JAMB their NIN or phone number yet. They need to make a profile with their NIN if they want to use any of JAMB’s services.
JAMB says they’re trying to be helpful by keeping their registration system open all year. This means people can register whenever they’re ready. After they register with JAMB, they can then go to the school they want to attend and finish signing up there. The schools might ask these students to pay a fee to process their application.
This new rule is a big change for many students. Before, people who wanted to study at NOUN or other distance learning schools didn’t have to register with JAMB. Now, everyone has to do it, no matter how or where they want to study.
The reason for this change is to make the whole system fairer and more organized. By having everyone register the same way, JAMB can keep better track of all students. This can help stop people from cheating or lying about their qualifications.
For students, this means a few more steps to take before they can start studying. They need to:
- Get their National Identification Number (NIN) if they don’t already have one.
- Create a profile code by sending their NIN to JAMB.
- Register with JAMB using their NIN and profile code.
- Then apply to their chosen school, like NOUN.
This change might make things a bit harder for some people at first. But JAMB believes it will make the whole system better and fairer in the long run. They’re trying to make sure that everyone who gets into a school in Nigeria has gone through the same process and meets the same standards.
For people who aren’t sure how to do all this, JAMB says they will try to help. They want to make the process as easy as possible for everyone. If people have questions, they can ask JAMB for help.
This new rule shows that Nigeria is trying to make its education system more organized and fair. By using technology like the NIN and having everyone register the same way, they hope to make things better for all students in the future.
