At least five students of Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA) have reportedly died from an unidentified illness, sparking concern within the university community.

According to students who spoke anonymously to Channels Television, four students passed away last week under unclear circumstances, while another died on Sunday after falling ill overnight. Despite growing anxiety, the university has yet to release an official statement addressing the situation.

A source disclosed that officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) visited the university last week to raise awareness about meningitis. However, they did not confirm whether the disease was linked to the student deaths, including two that occurred before their visit.

The university’s registrar, Maimaru Alhaji Tilli, confirmed that four deaths had been recorded but stated that the cause remains unknown. He noted that the Ministry of Health had advised the institution to decongest student accommodations as a precautionary measure.

In response to the crisis, Tilli said he had formally written to the Commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abubakar Tunga, seeking guidance on preventing further fatalities. Meanwhile, a student leader confirmed that the Students’ Union Government had urged university management to temporarily close the institution to safeguard students’ health.

As investigations continue, concerns remain high among students and staff, with many calling for urgent intervention to prevent further casualties.
