Miva Open University recently hosted a transformative public lecture highlighting the potential of Open Distance Learning (ODL) to revolutionize education in Nigeria. This groundbreaking event emphasized the role of technology in reshaping higher education and demonstrated Miva Open University’s leadership in this innovative educational approach.
During the lecture, Sim Shagaya, the chancellor of Miva Open University, addressed the audience about the crucial role of technology in modernizing higher education. Shagaya stressed the importance of fostering healthy competition and collaboration among educators to enhance Nigeria’s tertiary education system. He encouraged openness to change and constructive criticism, urging continuous improvement in educational practices.
Iheanyi Akwitti, the registrar of Miva Open University, provided an overview of the university’s ODL programs. He praised the success of the inaugural lecture, which showed Miva’s commitment to ODL and the growing support for this educational model in Nigeria. Akwitti noted that the event facilitated knowledge sharing, networking, and collaboration aimed at making higher education more accessible and of higher quality for all.
Chris Maiyaki, the acting executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), discussed the role of university administration in Open Distance Learning (ODL). He pointed out that ODL is a cost-effective and flexible way of learning that overcomes geographical and time barriers. Maiyaki stressed that ODL can help close the large gap between the high demand and limited supply of higher education in Nigeria. With almost two million university applications each year and only 500,000 to 700,000 spots available in Nigeria’s 274 universities, ODL offers a valuable solution to increase access to university education.
Maiyaki presented a plan for universities to handle the challenges of Open Distance Learning (ODL). He emphasized the importance of using technology to provide high-quality education and recommended strong online platforms and thorough student support services, such as counseling and academic advice. He also suggested moving from traditional teaching methods to approaches that focus more on students’ needs. His recommendations were well-received by the audience, showing the need for universities to adapt to the evolving ODL environment.
The event, held at the NUC headquarters in Abuja, brought together a distinguished group of academic and government leaders, including Julius Okojie, former executive secretary of the NUC and chairman of the event; Nuel Salihu, deputy executive secretary of NUC; and Tayo Arulogun, vice-chancellor of Miva Open University. Attendees also included NUC staff, university administrators, and enthusiastic Miva students.
