The Mark Elocution Spelling Competition is set to take place on November 8, 2024, at Inspira College in Ikorodu, Lagos. This exciting event is now in its third edition and invites participation from primary school pupils and secondary school students. The competition is open to pupils in Primary Three to Six and students from Junior Secondary School One to Senior Secondary School Three.
Mrs. Olajumoke Mark, the convener of the competition, shared that the primary goal of the event is to celebrate academic excellence among young learners. She emphasized the importance of directing students’ focus toward education while also helping to build their confidence. “As we all know, young children learn to retain whatever they have learned. Although it’s a fun competition for the students, it goes beyond just fun. We want to catch them young and focus their attention on education from an early age,” she explained.
Mark highlighted that today’s children learn and comprehend information more quickly than previous generations. With their ability to manipulate technology, she believes that this is the right time to shape their educational journeys.
Participation in the competition is divided into two categories, with forms available for N2,000 for non-participants and N3,000 for those who wish to compete. In the primary school category, the top prize winner will receive N70,000, while the first runner-up will take home N40,000, and the second runner-up will get N20,000.
For the secondary school category, the winner will receive N100,000, the second prize winner will earn N50,000, and the third prize winner will receive N30,000. Additionally, there will be numerous consolation prizes for all participants, ensuring everyone has a chance to walk away with a reward.
Several dignitaries from the education sector, particularly in the Ikorodu area, are expected to attend the event, including the Alagura of Agura, Oba Ahmed Ogunnnaike. Mrs. Mark reminded interested participants that the deadline for collecting forms for the competition is October 30, 2024.
