Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to transforming the education sector, stating that the efforts have yielded significant results across all levels of learning in the state.
Speaking during the inauguration of the Governing Councils of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, and Abiola Ajimobi Technical University (Tech-U), Ibadan, Governor Makinde reflected on the state’s educational journey since he assumed office in 2019.
“At the time, we had what I would call one and a half universities,” he said. “Today, Oyo State solely owns three universities, all of which are progressing well.”
Makinde explained that while LAUTECH was previously jointly owned with Osun State, his administration successfully secured sole ownership through a transparent process that culminated in the National Universities Commission (NUC) recognizing Oyo as the sole proprietor. He also clarified the status of Tech-U, noting that previous ownership ambiguities have now been resolved.
Additionally, the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education has been upgraded to a University of Education—another milestone the governor says underscores his commitment to educational development.
“From basic to tertiary education, we’ve recorded substantial progress in the past six years,” he said. “This shows that education is not just a pillar in name, but in action.”
Governor Makinde assured that his administration will continue to support all state-owned tertiary institutions in meeting their obligations to students and staff. He announced that the issue of subventions will be addressed, and pledged to establish fully-equipped Primary Health Care Centres, complete with ambulances, on the campuses of LAUTECH and Tech-U before year-end.
“The Governing Councils we’re inaugurating today are not ceremonial bodies,” Makinde emphasized. “They are crucial to steering the strategic and academic direction of the institutions.”
He commended Prof. Ayodeji Omole and his team for their four years of dedicated service at LAUTECH, and encouraged the new Tech-U Council, led by Dr. Adeduntan, to build on the solid foundation already in place.
“We believe these appointments reflect the expertise and leadership required to elevate our universities to national and continental excellence,” he concluded.
