LASU elections suspended

In response to the ongoing nationwide protests that have swept across Nigeria, Lagos State University (LASU) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) have taken significant measures to prioritize the safety of their students and staff. These precautions are part of a broader effort to protect lives and property during this period of widespread unrest.

Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations at LASU, made an official announcement regarding the suspension of all university-related activities. This decision includes suspending the Students Union General Elections that were originally scheduled to take place today. According to Thomas-Onashile, the suspension is a proactive step to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone associated with the university.

“We have made the decision to instruct both staff and students to stay away from the campus for their own safety,” Thomas-Onashile said in a statement. “Our primary concern is to protect everyone during these uncertain times. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates about when normal academic and administrative activities can resume.”

Similarly, Mr. David Ogungbe, the Registrar of LASUSTECH, has assured the university community that extra security measures are being implemented across all campuses. He emphasized the importance of remaining on campus to avoid the potential dangers associated with the protests. Ogungbe also issued instructions that university buses should remain on campus and not operate until further notice, as part of the safety measures.

“The safety of our students and staff is our utmost priority,” Ogungbe stated. “We are taking every precaution to ensure that our campuses remain secure during this period of unrest. Students are advised to stay on campus to minimize their exposure to any potential risks. Our transportation services will be restricted to ensure that everyone is kept safe.”

Both Lagos State University and Lagos State University of Science and Technology are actively monitoring the situation and are prepared to adapt their measures as necessary. The universities are committed to keeping their stakeholders informed and ensuring that their community members are protected during these challenging times.

The decision to suspend activities and implement additional security measures shows the universities’ commitment to the safety of their communities in the face of widespread protests and civil unrest.
