Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has rewarded academic excellence with a N10 million cash prize to Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session.
Nwosu, a Biochemistry graduate from the Faculty of Science, graduated with an impressive CGPA of 4.93. The announcement was made during LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo.
The event also featured the conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees and Distinguished Professorships. Notable awardees included Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, who received a Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa), and former Lagos State Deputy Governor Otunba Olufemi Pedro, who was conferred with a Doctor of Business.
Represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the critical role of education in nation-building.
“Education is the backbone of our society,” he said, stressing that academic excellence deserves as much recognition as achievements in sports, entertainment, or fashion.
He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to investing in education infrastructure and programmes like Job Initiative Lagos, aimed at enhancing the employability of final-year students.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello applauded the government’s continued support, revealing that 43 out of 44 programmes were recently accredited, and the university had launched new postgraduate courses attracting international students.
Chancellor Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN) urged the 11,917 graduating students to uphold the university’s reputation and remain innovative in their future pursuits.
