Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, in Moro Local Government Area, has announced plans to discipline some newly admitted students for allegedly damaging the university’s reputation through viral social media content.

In a letter addressed to the student body, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, expressed disappointment over videos circulating online showing some students in KWASU matriculation gowns behaving in ways that portrayed the institution negatively.

“You will all have seen the videos of some students portraying your institution in a bad light. The students were wearing Kwara State University’s matriculation gowns and depicting themselves as unworthy to be students of an institution of higher learning,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.

Prof. Jimoh condemned the actions, emphasizing that they undermine the hard work of the university’s faculty and staff, who are dedicated to grooming students into respectable and competent individuals. He stressed that such behavior contradicts the integrity and excellence upon which KWASU was established.

He urged students to take pride in their university and work collectively to protect its reputation, reminding them that the university’s certificate will remain part of their identity for life.

“The integrity of Kwara State University is ours to protect. It is our collective responsibility to uphold this university, as her name will always be a part of our history,” the statement read.

Prof. Jimoh revealed that the students involved in the viral videos had been identified and would face disciplinary action to serve as a deterrent to others.

“As a university, we are committed to upholding the excellence with which the institution was founded. We will resist any attempt to trivialize the hard work of many years by anyone from any quarter,” he added.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the achievements of KWASU graduates worldwide, urging current students to emulate their predecessors and maintain the institution’s standard of excellence.

“Soon, you too will go into the world holding the KWASU certificate, and I know you would be proud to say you hold a degree from Kwara State University, as your predecessors have shown the world that the KWASU graduate is an excellent and formidable individual,” he stated.

Prof. Jimoh concluded by advising students to remain law-abiding and focused on their academic pursuits, while assuring them of the university’s commitment to their success.
