Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, is set to graduate a total of 71 First Class students among 6,374 first-degree graduates during its 12th convocation ceremony, scheduled for Saturday.
Speaking with journalists on the university campus on Tuesday, while unveiling the programs for the 12th convocation ceremony, the KWASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, stated that 1,828 students earned Second Class Upper Division, 3,501 achieved Second Class Lower Division, and 974 received Third Class degrees for the 2023/2024 academic session.
The Vice-Chancellor also announced that a total of 6,891 students graduated with postgraduate degrees during the 2023/2024 academic session, including 49 PhDs and 468 Master’s degrees.
The management of the state-owned institution revealed plans to address transportation challenges faced by students by constructing additional hostel facilities within the university campus. The transportation issue persists as many students reside outside the campus.
“We have recently completed a 104-bedspace hostel, which the Chairman of KWASU’s Governing Council, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, OON, will commission this Thursday.
KWASU has also partnered with investors to realize the Students’ Smart City Hostel Project, which aims to deliver 25,000 bed spaces in the first phase. Currently, work is ongoing to deliver, in the first instance, 8,700 bed spaces within the next few months,” he said.
“As a university committed to producing well-rounded graduates, one of our goals is to secure more on-campus accommodation for our students. This will ensure they experience a comprehensive university culture.
Inadequate on-campus hostel facilities were among the challenges highlighted last year. However, we have explored private partnerships to address this. We hope more private organizations will partner with us to drive the research and infrastructure development of this great institution,” he added.
Professor Jimoh highlighted KWASU’s notable achievements in electric vehicle conversion and, more recently, hybrid CNG conversion.
“As an entrepreneurial and community development-focused university advocating for sustainable environments, KWASU views these achievements as contributions to cleaner environments for all, with the added benefit of boosting economic growth for the institution and society at large.”
The Vice-Chancellor also commended the Kwara State Government for allocating funds to complete the Osi and Ilesha-Baruba campuses of the university. He noted that the campuses are equipped with lecture halls, classrooms, laboratories, and offices, among other facilities, ensuring their full functionality.
He emphasized that the institution’s management would not tolerate indiscipline or internet fraud among its students, reiterating that any student found engaging in such behaviors would be expelled from the university.
