In an effort to improve education in Kwara State, 500 teachers from five local government areas participated in a workshop focused on modern digital learning. The event was organized by the Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP) in partnership with the Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development. The training took place at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Ilorin.
The workshop aimed to equip educators with the necessary skills to embrace digital education. Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, the State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, explained that the goal was to introduce a digital approach to learning that would provide continuous access to quality education. She emphasized that the state is transitioning from traditional methods to digital tools, preparing both teachers and students for the future of education.
The five local government areas that participated in the first phase of the initiative include Moro, Ilorin West, Ilorin South, Oyun, and Offa. Modibbo Kawu further highlighted that this training would help teachers adapt to the challenges of the digital age and improve their teaching methods. The training is part of a larger effort by the current administration to support teachers through various workshops, aligning with global educational trends.
During the event, the Commissioner encouraged the teachers to apply the knowledge gained from the training in their classrooms, with the hope that it would lead to better student outcomes and overall educational development. She also emphasized the importance of teachers continually improving their skills to stay ahead of educational trends.
Abdulrasaq Olooru, Director of Human Capital Development at the Ministry of Education, praised the state government for its investment in the professional growth of teachers. He urged participants to actively use the skills they learned and continue updating their knowledge to keep up with the evolving education landscape.
Bala Dada, the Education Officer for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), spoke about the partnership behind the program. He shared that the training program was developed by UNICEF in collaboration with Microsoft and other partners, aimed at providing access to Nigeria’s education curriculum from any location across the country. Dada encouraged the teachers to view the workshop as a valuable opportunity that would enhance their interactions and effectiveness in the classroom.
This digital skills training is an important step towards improving the quality of education in Kwara State, ensuring that both teachers and students are equipped for the challenges of the future.
