Kwara Governors wife Dr Olufolake AbdulRazaq

The wife of the Kwara State governor, Ambassador Olufolake Abdulrazaq, has joined the call for stronger efforts to safeguard the girl child in Nigerian society.

Speaking at a book launch in Ilorin, the state capital, Mrs. Abdulrazaq emphasized the need for collective responsibility in protecting and empowering young girls. She urged individuals and groups to complement government efforts in addressing the challenges faced by the girl-child.

Represented by the Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Dr. Alabi Afeez Abolore, the First Lady highlighted that the issue of the girl-child is a global concern and should not be left solely in the hands of the government. She called on well-meaning Nigerians to actively participate in safeguarding their rights and well-being.

The book, titled Safeguarding the Girl-Child from Social Vices, was reviewed by two scholars, Dr. Ronke Soyombo and Dr. A. Olorungbebe.

Dr. Soyombo, who also serves as the Special Adviser on Education to the Ogun State Governor, commended the book for simplifying advocacy efforts and outlining key areas for legislative action, enforcement, and intervention. She stressed that the challenges faced by the girl-child are not just a national issue but a global one, requiring collaborative efforts.

Dr. Olorungbebe described the book as an essential manual for taking concrete steps toward protecting the girl-child from societal dangers.

Delivering a lecture at the event, Islamic cleric Dr. Muhammad Lukuman Isalekoto underscored the role of parents in guiding and mentoring their children. He warned that neglecting parental responsibilities could lead children astray, making them susceptible to negative influences. He also urged parents to model positive behavior, emphasizing that “charity begins at home.”

Speaking on her motivation for writing the book, Dr. Zainab Bolajoko Balogun stated that it was the result of years of advocacy and research on issues affecting the girl-child. She called for urgent action to protect young girls, citing insights gained from interactions with other stakeholders in the field.

The event reinforced the importance of advocacy, legislation, and parental involvement in ensuring a safer and more inclusive society for the girl-child.
