The Kwara State Leading Education Achievement and Reform Now (KwaraLEARN) program has successfully enrolled 180,000 students in just two years. Initiated by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the program focuses on improving education quality through significant investments in technology to help teachers and enhance basic education.
Laide Abel, Managing Director of KwaraLEARN, shared the program’s success at a retreat marking its second anniversary. He reported that KwaraLEARN has significantly improved literacy and numeracy skills among pupils in basic schools by at least 50%. Abel expressed his satisfaction with the results, saying, “Over the past two years, we’ve made great strides. The number of children who could not read has dropped by over 50%, and those struggling with basic math have also improved by more than 50%. We are dedicated to continuing our work to achieve even better results.”
The program’s success is evident in the sharp rise in school enrollments. Abel highlighted that primary school enrollment in Kwara State has jumped to over 180,000 from 120,000 since the program started. This growth shows the program’s effectiveness and increasing popularity. Additionally, absenteeism has decreased by 50%, demonstrating the program’s successful efforts in monitoring and improving student attendance.
Muhammed Baba Salahu, Chairman of the House Committee on Education, praised the Kwara State Government for its dedication to improving the education sector. He recognized that while there are still challenges, the progress made through the KwaraLEARN initiative marks a significant improvement from previous issues. “The KwaraLEARN project is very promising. While we cannot transform the education sector overnight, the progress we have seen is a clear move away from past difficulties. We appreciate Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his significant investments in education,” Salahu said.
Sa’adatu Moddibo Kawu, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, also praised the KwaraLEARN program for its positive impact. She observed that the initiative has significantly improved educational standards, as shown by recent examination results. “The KwaraLEARN program has been extremely effective. We have seen remarkable improvements in learning outcomes, and the reduction in absenteeism is particularly encouraging,” she said.
