The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has uncovered a serious problem with admissions by revealing that 21 candidates used fake IJMB results in the 2023 academic year. This issue highlights a major flaw in how academic certificates are checked.
A policy document from Abuja shows that 12 of these 21 candidates were recommended for admission by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. JAMB has made it clear that these candidates, who submitted fake IJMB results, were not approved for admission.
This situation points to significant problems in the admission process, mainly due to weak certificate screening at the involved institutions. JAMB has emphasized that all certificates should have the signature of the institution’s head, like the Vice-Chancellor, Provost, or Rector, to avoid such problems.
JAMB’s investigation found that five institutions were involved, with ABU Zaria being the most notable offender. To address concerns about admission integrity, JAMB has pledged to uphold educational standards in Nigeria. The board said, “These new measures, along with others being planned, aim to protect the progress made in education, especially in exams, from being compromised by dishonest individuals.”
This issue comes after JAMB introduced the Nigerian Post-Secondary Education Data System verification platform in 2021. This platform was created to fight the falsification of IJMB and JUPEB results and to improve the admission process.
