The TechWomen Program is created to help women become stronger leaders in science and technology. The program wants to connect women with opportunities and support them in moving forward in their careers. It also helps them follow their dreams and become role models for other women and girls in their communities. Women who join the program will work on special projects with mentors at top companies in San Francisco or Chicago for five weeks. They will also attend workshops to improve their professional skills and go to networking events. At the end of the program, they will travel to Washington, DC for important meetings and special events.

The TechWomen Program has a simple but important goal – to help women leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) become successful. They do this by giving women the chances they need to grow in their careers and make their dreams come true. The program also helps them become inspiring examples for other women and girls back home.
The program shows how the United States wants to help women and girls around the world have more opportunities and rights, especially in the technology field. Over the last twelve years, more than 1,000 women have been part of TechWomen. These women come from many countries including Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kenya, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Yemen and Zimbabwe.
Eligibility Requirements
To join the TechWomen Program for Emerging Leaders, you need to meet these requirements:
- You must be a woman who has worked for at least two full years in science, technology, engineering, or math jobs. Remember that internships and unpaid work don’t count towards these two years.
- You must have finished at least a bachelor’s degree or a four-year university degree.
- You must be able to speak and write English well.
- You must be from one of these countries and live there permanently: Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan or Zimbabwe.
- You must be able to get a U.S. J-1 exchange visitor visa.
- You must not have applied for an immigrant visa to the United States in the last five years (except for the visa lottery).
- You must not be a U.S. citizen or have a green card.
Benefits
The TechWomen program will pay for:
- Your plane tickets from your home country to the United States and back
- Your plane tickets from San Francisco or Chicago to Washington, D.C.
- A place to stay in San Francisco, Sunnyvale, California, Emeryville, California or Chicago, Illinois during your mentorship
- Your food and other daily needs
- Your hotel in Washington, D.C.
- Bus or train tickets to get to your host company
- Transportation to group activities in San Francisco, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.
Remember that you will need to pay for any extra activities you want to do, like sightseeing or cultural events, and any personal travel inside or outside the United States that isn’t part of the program.
If you join TechWomen, you’ll stay in San Francisco, Sunnyvale, California, Emeryville, California or Chicago, Illinois. Where you stay depends on which company you’ll be working with. You’ll share an apartment with another woman in the program. You’ll have your own bedroom for privacy, but you’ll share the living room and kitchen with your roommate.
