Applications are now open for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) for the 2025 academic year. This program aims to support young people whose access to higher education is hindered by economic and social barriers, with a special focus on young women, refugees, forcibly displaced youth, and young people living with disabilities.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UWC offers fully-funded opportunities for undergraduate and master’s degree studies. The support includes:

Eligibility Criteria
Master’s Degree Applicants:
- Must be no older than 30 years
- Must meet UWC’s minimum admissions requirements and apply for academic admission for 2025
- Must be prepared to begin full-time master’s degree study in January 2025
- Must provide evidence of social and economic barriers to accessing university education
Undergraduate Applicants:
- Must be no older than 26 years
- Must meet UWC’s minimum admissions requirements and apply for academic admission for 2025
- Must be prepared to register for full-time undergraduate study in January 2025
- Must provide evidence of social and economic barriers to accessing university education
Application Process
Step 1: Apply for Admission to UWC
Applicants must first submit an academic application to study at UWC for the 2025 academic year. Only applicants who have successfully submitted their academic application and obtained a UWC application number are eligible to apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
Step 2: Apply to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program
After obtaining a UWC application number, applicants can complete the online application for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
