Scholarship Details: The University of Pretoria is a research-intensive institution seeking candidates for doctoral studies through the Commonwealth Scholarship. The scholarship, part of South Africa’s contribution to the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan, offers three doctoral scholarships to students from Commonwealth countries (excluding South Africa). Awards are given on a competitive basis.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a citizen of a Commonwealth country (excluding South Africa).
  • Must conduct studies at the University of Pretoria, starting in 2025.
  • Must have applied to study at UP for the 2025 academic year.
  • Must have identified a potential supervisor.
  • Must have submitted academic records to the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA).
  • Must have completed a postgraduate or Master’s degree no less than two years prior to applying.
  • Must be under 40 years old.
  • PhD and Master’s students currently or previously registered at the University of Pretoria are not eligible.

  • UP Online application Ref “T” number or 2025 student number.
  • Written motivation from the prospective Doctoral supervisor confirming the availability of research funding.
  • Outline of proposed research work (one A4 page).
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) – no more than 3 pages.
  • Proof of study leave if applicable.
  • Copy of a valid passport.
  • Full academic transcripts of all qualifications obtained.
  • Two reference forms from different academics/supervisors who know the applicant’s academic performance.
