Program Details:
The Academy Scholars Program at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies is designed to support scholars whose research combines excellence in a social science discipline with deep knowledge of regions outside the United States or Canada. The scholars’ work should span traditional disciplinary boundaries and address comparative, transnational, or domestic issues, past or present.
The Academy Scholars are part of a distinguished community characterized by resourcefulness, initiative, and originality. Their work is expected to lay the foundation for careers in research universities or international institutions.
Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible for the Harvard University Academy Scholars Program, applicants must:
- Hold a PhD or comparable doctoral degree (within two years of the August 1, 2025 start date) or be advanced doctoral candidates in the social sciences.
- Provide degree conferral documentation by June 30, 2025, if nearing dissertation completion.
- Not hold or have completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship.
Program Benefits:
- Each year, five or six Academy Scholars are selected for two-year in-residence appointments, with an annual stipend of $80,000.
- The two-year fellowship must be completed within a three-year window.
- The first year of the fellowship must begin no later than the fall immediately following the fellowship offer.
- Scholars may apply for a one-time leave of up to 12 months between Years 1 and 2 to accept or continue a tenure-track teaching appointment.
- Scholars may not accept other funding, awards, or obligations during their appointment.
Required Documents:
Applicants must submit the following documents:
- Curriculum vitae (CV) including a list of publications.
- Research proposal (maximum 2000 words) detailing intellectual objectives and planned methodological and disciplinary work.
- One scholarly writing sample (e.g., PhD dissertation chapter or single-authored peer-reviewed academic journal article, maximum 50 pages, in English).
- A copy of the PhD program transcript.
- Three letters of recommendation, which must be uploaded directly and confidentially by the recommenders by September 20, 2024.
