First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called for stronger domestic and international support to address key social challenges in Nigeria, particularly in education, healthcare, and the welfare of vulnerable groups.
According to a statement from her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, Mrs. Tinubu made this appeal while receiving a delegation of spouses of Heads of Missions in Nigeria at the State House, Abuja.
She highlighted the alarming number of out-of-school children, especially the Almajiri, describing the situation as challenging but not beyond resolution. She emphasized the need for a structured intervention, including boarding schools that provide both Islamic and formal education while ensuring the well-being of the children.
“These children you see holding plates and begging for food are not beggars,” she said. “They came in search of knowledge but have no food to eat. Anyone who is truly God-fearing will reject crime, yet many of these children have been subjected to abuse. That is why we are taking meaningful steps to support them.”
Senator Tinubu noted that her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) is actively working to enhance education, healthcare, and overall livelihoods. She stressed that while the challenges are significant, sustained efforts and global partnerships can drive meaningful change.
The delegation, led by Sigalit Freeman, wife of the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, commended the First Lady for her dedication to uplifting vulnerable communities. Freeman, accompanied by the spouses of the Guinea Bissau and Canadian ambassadors, stated that their group is committed to supporting education in Nigeria.
“We have become more active every year, working with various organizations, including schools, widows’ groups, and hospitals. This year, we decided to support an NGO focusing on education, and we hope to collaborate with you, the First Lady, to achieve our mission,” Freeman said.
As part of their initiatives, the diplomatic spouses’ association plans to host a fundraising gala to support educational programs for Nigerian children.
Expressing her appreciation for their support, Senator Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to empowering women and children, emphasizing that women are the “fulcrum of great nations.” She welcomed further collaboration to create lasting solutions to Nigeria’s social challenges.
