The Federal Government has unveiled two new initiatives—the Luminah Girl Child Initiative and the Broader Quality Education and Learning Outcomes Programme—aimed at tackling the issue of out-of-school children and promoting girl-child education across the country.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the initiatives as bold steps toward transforming Nigeria’s education sector. He emphasized the government’s commitment to improving Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) by repositioning Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs) and expanding access to Skill Training Centres (STCs) and Vocational Enterprise Institutions (VEIs) to address youth unemployment.

“We at the ministry have launched our six key priority intervention areas within the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) for Renewed Hope. These include Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM); TVET; Out-of-School Children; Girl-Child Education; Data & Digitalization; and Education Quality Assurance,” Alausa stated.

As part of these efforts, the government has also inaugurated a committee for the Nigerian Education Data Initiative (NEDI) to enhance data-driven decision-making and improve the overall quality of education. He emphasized that education is a shared responsibility and urged all stakeholders to push for innovation, inclusion, and excellence in the sector.

Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, highlighted the Luminah Girl Child Initiative as a strategic intervention to bridge educational gaps and equip young people with the skills and knowledge needed in an evolving world.

“The fundamental pillar of this mission is empowering our educators, ensuring they receive the necessary training, resources, and support to provide high-quality, future-focused instruction that meets the diverse needs of learners,” she said.

She also stressed the importance of expanding educational opportunities for girls and women, recognizing education as a tool for breaking barriers, driving economic empowerment, and promoting gender equity.

“By investing in inclusive learning opportunities, we are not just educating individuals; we are building stronger families, resilient communities, and a more prosperous nation,” she added.

Ahmad called for full commitment to these initiatives and assured that the ministry would provide the necessary resources and institutional support to ensure their successful implementation.
