The Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, Dr. Mukhail Akinde, has called on the Federal Government to grant polytechnics the authority to offer degree programmes, aiming to eliminate the long-standing disparity between BSc and HND qualifications.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday in preparation for the institution’s 22nd convocation ceremony and 45th Founders’ Day anniversary, Akinde emphasized that this move would create a more inclusive and balanced education system in Nigeria.
He highlighted that allowing polytechnics to run degree programmes would bridge the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge, fostering a more skill-driven economy. He further stressed the need for significant investment in polytechnic education to drive national economic growth.
“We are facing economic challenges because polytechnic education is underfunded,” he said. “We have made numerous innovations that could benefit our economy, but without adequate support, they cannot reach industrial implementation. If we truly want to change the narrative, we must prioritize polytechnic education and support the president’s initiatives. Additionally, for any country to achieve remarkable progress, investment in electricity is crucial.”
Dr. Akinde commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration, acknowledging its positive impact on the economy. “The president’s policies are yielding results. Many industries that previously shut down are now being revived. Several aviation companies that left Nigeria are returning, which is a sign of economic recovery under Tinubu’s leadership,” he noted.
He also announced that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, would deliver the convocation lecture, while the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, along with two other distinguished personalities, would receive special awards.
“We have carefully selected our convocation lecturer, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who will speak on the Renewed Hope Agenda, the impact of emigration on the education sector (Japa syndrome), and proposed solutions for progress,” Akinde stated.
He further emphasized the rigorous selection process undertaken by the Academic Board in choosing the awardees, with the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo (SAN), being among the distinguished honorees.
