Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have commenced an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage.
The strike, which began on Monday, March 24, was declared by the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) after teachers received their February salaries without the new wage adjustment.
In a statement, the union criticized the non-payment of the revised salary, describing it as disturbing, disheartening, and unsympathetic to the challenges faced by teachers.
The NUT further lamented the economic hardship in the country, stressing that the continued financial struggles of Nigerian teachers would no longer be tolerated.
The union urged the government to implement the N70,000 minimum wage in the March salary payments, disburse six months of minimum wage arrears as previously agreed, and begin the implementation of various allowances, including a 40 percent peculiar allowance and additional salary increases.
The union also called on all primary school teachers in the FCT to comply with the strike action until their demands are met.
