Since 2016, the Foundation for a Better Environment (FABE) has empowered over 30,000 schoolchildren with knowledge and skills in environmental sustainability through its flagship project, EcoSchoolsNG.

Speaking at the 2024 closeout ceremony held recently in Lagos, the founder of FABE Foundation and convener of the EcoSchoolsNG initiative, Temitope Okunnu, shared insights into the journey so far.

“The EcoSchoolsNG initiative was created to equip young minds with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to become sustainability champions, environmental stewards, and pioneers of the circular economy,” Okunnu said.

Supported by Aspire Coronation Trust Foundation, Access Bank, Danone, and endorsed by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, the initiative promotes eco-consciousness among students.

At the event, Okunnu reflected on the 10-month journey of climate education and advocacy.

“It is with immense pride and gratitude that we mark this closeout ceremony,” she said. “We’re celebrating a new generation of eco-conscious leaders, climate advocates, green entrepreneurs, and eco-ambassadors who are ready to shape a sustainable future for Nigeria and beyond.”

Throughout the programme, 20 secondary schools across various communities were engaged. Students received hands-on training in waste-to-wealth solutions, climate action strategies, conservation practices, and eco-entrepreneurship.

Okunnu urged participants to remain active in the fight against climate change. “We must all be participants, not just spectators. The impacts of climate change are real, and no one is exempt,” she stated.

Also speaking at the event, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Titilayo Oshodi, applauded the programme’s reach and impact.

“Since its inception, EcoSchoolsNG has trained over 30,000 students, youths, and women. This is what happens when knowledge is turned into action,” Oshodi said. “These students now know how to transform plastic waste into useful materials, turn food scraps into compost, and even give old tyres a second life. They are the superheroes our planet needs.”

Representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Dr. Gaji Tajudeen, Bolaji Badru praised FABE’s innovative and impactful approach.

“This project has successfully instilled eco-conscious values in young minds and provided practical skills for sustainable living. We are grooming leaders who will drive environmental sustainability across communities,” he said.

Programme Manager at Aspire Coronation Trust Foundation, Abiodun Owo, also expressed admiration for the project.

“We’re incredibly proud of what FABE Foundation is achieving with young people. This kind of education is vital. It means more trees planted, fewer single-use plastics, and a planet that’s better protected in the long run,” Owo said.
