Experts have highlighted the importance of quality education for girls and active community participation in gender-related issues as key factors in achieving gender equality in Ethiopia.

The Union of Ethiopian Women and Children Associations (UEWCA) recently organized a panel discussion to assess the progress and challenges of gender equality in the country.

Education and Gender Equality Advisor, Dr. Yeshareg Damite, stressed the need for effective guidelines and policies to ensure accountability in promoting gender equality. She emphasized that education plays a crucial role in empowering women, as educated women are better equipped to make informed decisions about their future.

“Every girl should have access to education, as it provides opportunities for self-improvement and economic independence,” she said.

She acknowledged improvements in primary school enrollment in Ethiopia, considering it a positive step toward gender equality. However, she called for greater focus on education and community engagement to empower women and secure their future.

“Currently, Ethiopian women face challenges such as rising living costs, conflicts in various parts of the country, and harmful societal norms,” she noted.

Dr. Yeshareg also stressed the need for collective action to combat women and child abuse, urging increased community awareness and mobilization for women’s empowerment.

A representative from the Addis Ababa City Administration, Tsedalech Michael, noted that women’s participation in politics and the economy is improving, particularly in the capital, where more opportunities are available.

“Women are increasingly involved in decision-making processes, and their economic participation is growing due to various initiatives that promote gender equality,” she said.

She encouraged women to actively engage in social, political, and economic affairs to build a better future for all.

Presenting a paper titled “The Status of Gender Equality in Ethiopia,” Eskinder Lakew, a Gender Expert from the Ministry of Education, stated that Ethiopia is working toward gender equality through various policies and strategies. However, he acknowledged that gaps remain in women’s economic empowerment and political representation.

He emphasized the importance of government partnerships, multi-sector collaborations, and community-driven efforts in achieving gender equality.

“The prevalence of women and child abuse is worsening due to ongoing conflicts in some regions. This issue requires urgent attention,” he warned.

Experts at the event collectively called for stronger policies, increased investment in education, and community-driven initiatives to advance gender equality in Ethiopia.
